A partnership between Washington and Abu Dhabi on solar power technology encourages the transition to a green economy, an official said.

The U.S. Department of Energy and Abu Dhabi renewable energy initiative Masdar announced they would work together to test new coatings for solar cells. The coating, the Energy Department said, is designed to prevent problems associated with dust adhesion, moisture and cementation problems.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman said the collaboration backs the development of cutting-edge solar power technology.

“Through bilateral relationships like this, we can help build a secure, prosperous and sustainable energy future for the citizens of our nations and the world,” he said in a statement.

The relationship is part of a memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Abu Dhabi in April. The measure outlines potential partnerships in clean and sustainable energy technology.
