San Diego Gas & Electric Wednesday will seek approval from city council members on a $15,000 pilot project to mount eight 200 watt solar panels on utility poles in the Mount Hope neighborhood.

According to a report on the project to be delivered to members of the council’s Natural Resources and Culture Committee, the panels would be tied into SDG&E’s power grid and produce electricity during peak use periods. If the project receives approval, the utility would work with Petra Solar of South Plainfield, N.J., to place panels on poles lining trolley tracks near 43rd and K streets at the end of May.

The panels are a little over 5 feet long and 3 feet wide.If approved by the committee, the project would be considered later by the full city council.
